his team justice, but when I think

PORTLAND, Ore. - Futty Danso scored the lone goal on a penalty kick and the Portland Timbers defeated Monarcas Morelia 1-0 in an international friendly on Wednesday night. Dansos penalty kick came in the 40th minute. A short time later, Morelia midfielder Aldo Leao Ramirez was sent off for arguing a call with an official, leaving the team down a player. Goalkeeper Federico Vilar, the Monarcas captain, also tried to appeal to the official and was yellow carded. Monarcas Morelia had one of its best chances to equalize on forward Santigo Trellezs breakaway in the 74th minute, but the shot sailed just wide. Morelia, which plays in Mexicos first-division Liga MX, is a two-time runner up for the CONCACAF Champions Cup, and played twice in the SuperLiga competition between MLS and Mexican teams. They won it in 2010, the events final season. Monarcas played many of its starters, including veteran forward Hector Mancilla, the two-time Liga MX golden boot winner. Mancilla had the teams lone goal in a 2-1 exhibition loss to Brazilian side Cruzeiro last week in Bridgeview, Ill. Monarcas coach Carlos Bustos wasnt pleased with how the game was refereed. "Im going out with a bad taste in my mouth," he said through an interpreter. In contrast, the Timbers rested many of their starters. Some, including top scorers Will Johnson and Rodney Wallace, have been called up by their national teams for CONCACAF Gold Cup competition. Portland also has an MLS match this Sunday in Columbus. Portland coach Caleb Porter said the Timbers had three goals going into the match. They wanted to give guys experience, stay healthy and give fans a good show. "I think if you look at those goals, it was mission accomplished," Porter said. Portland has gone undefeated in 15 straight Major League Soccer matches, and it has not allowed a league opponent a goal at Jeld-Wen Field since March 9 against the Montreal Impact. Danso, a defender who was named captain of the match, joked that he took the penalty kick away from midfielder Michael Nanchoff: "He wasnt happy about it." The match was part of Portlands Copa Verde effort to bring Mexican first-division teams to Jeld-Wen to reach out to the local Hispanic community. Red- and yellow-clad fans of Morelia filled the west side of Jeld-Wen and drowned out Mexicos national anthem with their drums and trumpets. "We kind of felt like it was an away game a little bit," Danso said of the boisterous Morelia fans. In 2008, before the Timbers joined MLS, Morelia defeated Portland 2-0 in a friendly at Jeld-Wen. Tests earlier this week revealed a Grade 2 left hamstring strain for Sabathia, who was hurt in last Fridays start against San Francisco. Its an injury that will require about eight weeks to heal. In Europe, top teams seem to be largely happy with their squads after spending nearly $1 billion in the off-season. And although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers. Nick Chubb Jersey . Three came down to the fourth quarter while quarterbacks continued to shine in all four games; so important to the overall quality of the game. Baker Mayfield Jersey . Two pressure cooker bombs exploded near the finish line of the April 15 race in an area packed with fans cheering the passing runners. Three people were killed and more than 260 injured, including at least 16 who lost limbs. As a young gymnast growing up in Oklahoma in the 1980s, I had one idol: Mary Lou Retton, who vaulted her way to victory at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Mary Lou was peppy, compact and full of explosive power. As a gymnast I was nothing like her. All the same, I was determined to carry on her legacy: to go out and achieve excellence at every single competition, no matter what the circumstances.Mary Lous accomplishments followed me and my future Olympic teammates to dream throughout our childhoods, and they accompanied us as we marched into the Georgia Dome for our own Olympic moment when we won gold in July of 1996.Fast forward 20 years, and the Final Five -- Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabrielle Douglas, Madison Kocian and Laurie Hernandez -- are the undisputed queens of gymnastics. You cant really compare the victories: My teammates and I won Olympic gold by eight-tenths of a point in a close duel with the Russians. The Final Five stormed the Rio Olympic Arena and landed eight whole points above the nearest competition (still Russia). They are that good.No one word does this team justice, but when I think about it I keep coming back to the word strong. All gymnasts are physically strong, and behind every flawless routine is half a lifetime of work. But the mental strength displayed by these five young women surpasses age, natural talent, and even the assurance that springs from outstanding past results. It was an open secret that the American women were going to win the team gold medal in Rio, barring a stranger-than-fiction catastrophe. It was so clear they were the best that they didnt even need to do everything they were capable of to lock down that medal. They could have chosen to simplify their routines. To play it safe. To protect the gold. They could have accepted winning by seven points, or six, or five -- and it still wwould have been glorious.ddddddddddddBut they refused to go easy. They gave everything they had, performing to the maximum of their abilities. And they executed flawlessly, turning in the most dominant performance of any womens gymnastics team ever.We say its easier to be the hunter than the hunted. I always felt it was simpler to be the underdog, because when there are no expectations, whatever you do is going to be great. But when youre the team thats supposed to win -- when youve been splashed across the media and everyone is saying that you cant possibly lose this -- it can throw you off balance. What I love about the Final Five is that each of these young women was actually able to thrive on that pressure. They understood that they were walking in as the best and they were determined to maintain that. To be able to cross the finish line, to fight for every tenth of a point as though everything were riding on it, is as hard as most of the gymnastics they did so well in Rio.What better example could be set for all the little girls who were glued to their TV or computer screens watching them this summer? What more could we ask for in role models for our daughters, the next generation of Simones, Alys, Gabbys, Madisons and Lauries?More on the Final Five? They are the greatest!
